Amnesty International denounced Taiwan’s execution of Huang Linkai on Thursday, calling the event a “shameful setback” as it marked the first execution in Taiwan since 2020. Director of Amnesty International Taiwan E-Ling Chiu stated: “The execution of Huang Linkai (黃麟凱) was carried out in violation of constitutional and international safeguards on the use of the death penalty, and while an appeal filed by his lawyer to stop the execution was still pending before the courts.

Ontario Superior Court Justice Edward Morgan on Wednesday dismissed a lawsuit accusing Canadian company Barrick Gold of committing human rights abuses against Tanzanian mine workers. Justice Morgan granted Barrick Gold’s application for forum non conveniens (inconvenient forum), agreeing that Tanzanian courts would be better suited to handle the case.

Six environmental activists have been released from police custody in Cambodia on Monday after they were detained over the weekend for trespassing in the Vern Sai Siem Reap National Park. This comes following the detention of Ouch Leng, Prum Mao, Mon Mab, Ot Latin, Tat Udom, and Heng Sros near Talat commune, Sesan district, Stung Treng province, near the National Park. The activists were detained and moved to the provincial police headquarters and questioned by officials until Sunday.

Protesters picked up arms in the ongoing cost-of-living protests in the French colonial holding of Martinique on Wednesday said the local French government. According to the Prefecture of Martinique, protesters set up seven barricades during the protest and targeted firefighters and police officers on three occasions with automatic rifle fire as the authorities attempted to dismantle the barricades. The protesters also launched Molotov cocktails and other projectiles at the government forces.

The United Kingdom announced that it, along with France and Algeria, has called for an urgent meeting at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to discuss the humanitarian situation in Gaza while the Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that the UK was considering sanctions on Israeli Ministers. Foreign Secretary David Lammy said the humanitarian situation in Northern Gaza remains dire, with the civilian population having limited access to basic services and food.

Aaron Carr, the director of the Housing Rights Initiative (HRI), announced a mass civil rights complaint against 203 real estate companies in California for illegally discriminating against Section 8 renters. Section 8 renters refer to those eligible for rent subsidy under the US Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Housing Choice Vouchers program. The program is designed to support very low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled in finding housing under market conditions.
