Spooky movies always seem like a good idea this time of year. First, you gather the family, then you pop the popcorn, turn out the lights, and cue up the flick. Then you fast forward two or three hours when “someone” is too scared to sleep alone. Scary movies for kids often = sleepless nights for parents. Since everyone has a different tolerance for scary it can be difficult to know what’s appropriate for your kid until it’s too late.

“It’s the thought that counts” is a phrase that was undoubtedly coined by a mom. For Mother’s Day it feels especially relevant. When the brunch spots and spas were closed during Covid, many of us had to get a little more creative than usual.

Last year, during a swimming lesson with her grade four class, my daughter had a very public meltdown at our local pool. As the only female parent volunteer I was in charge of a gaggle of six or seven girls post-swim and, after supervising the shower, I herded them into the changing area. My daughter was the last one out of the pool and by the time she reached the showers, everyone was gone. In her mind, I had abandoned her to be with her classmates.

“Hot girl summer” is cancelled. This year we’re doing *hag* girl summer. We’re holidaying in a swamp; we are hiding in the woods inside a hut with chicken legs; we will have no “beach body” but rather a *bog body* covered in moss and mushrooms.
