The Board of Education honored retiring staff, CABE student leaders, and the top five percent of Newtown High School’s 2025 graduating class in a Celebration of Excellence during its Tuesday, June 3 meeting. Family, friends, and colleagues crowded the chairs of Reed Intermediate School’s library for the meeting, excitedly applauding each of the honorees throughout the event. The Celebration of Excellence began with the BOE recognizing the 14 retirees from Newtown Public Schools.

Newtown Interfaith Council members talked about potential future endeavors at their Tuesday, May 13, meeting. After presenting the interfaith Seder earlier last month, NIC members excitedly set their sights on ways they can help the Newtown community this summer. Newtown Congregational Church Lead Pastor Matt Crebbin said his church has been in conversations with the Newtown Public Schools district about local students’ and families’ lunch meal debt, which is around $20,000.

The Commission on Aging discussed transportation and senior center updates, and also listened to a presentation on senior activities from Newtown Community Center representatives, at its latest meeting. Director of Human Services Natalie Griffith started her report by announcing she has hired Jennifer Faircloth as Newtown’s Transportation Coordinator.

Newtown Middle School PTA celebrated the school’s faculty with several events for Teacher Appreciation Week, which ran May 5-9. Celebrated on the first full week of May, Teacher Appreciation Week is a national holiday that honors educators for supporting their students. It was another chance for the NMS PTA to treat the school’s staff and faculty to different events throughout the week.

The school district’s 14 Profiles in Professionalism honorees for the 2024-25 school year were recognized at the Board of Education’s Tuesday, May 20, meeting in Reed Intermediate School’s library. The award is a longstanding tradition in the district, where people can recognize a colleague, parent, or volunteer in any role or participatory fashion throughout the school district.
