The school district’s 14 Profiles in Professionalism honorees for the 2024-25 school year were recognized at the Board of Education’s Tuesday, May 20, meeting in Reed Intermediate School’s library. The award is a longstanding tradition in the district, where people can recognize a colleague, parent, or volunteer in any role or participatory fashion throughout the school district.

Board of Education’s CIP/Facilities/Finance (CFF) Subcommittee discussed April’s financial report, as well as healthy food certification for the district, during its Tuesday, May 20 meeting. Director of Business and Finance Tanja Gouveia said they currently have a year-end projected balance of $160,528 dollars — spending 99.82 percent of the district’s budget. This is an increase over the previous month by around $45,000. There were a few changes over the prior month that Gouveia wanted to note.

St Rose of Lima School students, faculty, volunteers, and more laced up their sneakers for the school’s Walk-a-Thon fundraiser on Wednesday, April 30. The goal of the Walk-a-Thon is to bring the community together and raise funds for St Rose School, according to Director of Mission Advancement Laura Moulder. Students walked miles around the field next to the school and collected donations in advance for their participation. This is far from the school’s first Walk-a-Thon.

Nearly 100 people attended Friends of Newtown Seniors’ (FONS) Second Annual Membership Dinner on Wednesday, May 7 at Newtown Community Center. FONS Board Member Beverly Bennett-Schaedler said one goal of the dinner is to give local residents 55 and older an overview of what the organization has achieved over the past year and what they hope to achieve in the future. The other goal, she added, is to get the word out to potential volunteers.

It was an eventful night on Thursday, May 8, for those attending the latest installment of Edmond Town Hall’s “Newtown Talks: Conversations on Culture, Society, and Change” speaker series. The event featured clinical social worker Steve Gross, who had audience members dance, high five, and play games as a way to kickstart their journey to embracing fun. The Life is Good Playmaker Project is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping kids heal from childhood trauma.
