Remember, the regulations this year are 1 fish per person from 28 to 31 inches. The season will also run until December 15th. On the tog, fishing is improving a lot for boats fishing the South Shore reefs and wrecks.

VIDEOTogging is beginning to pick up steam around the island. On the South Shore some of the headboats are seeing more productivity on wreck trips with mixed cod while up on the North Shore, a whopping 12-pounder came over the gunnel last week for a lucky angler! Some other scattered reports of tog in the 25 to 60-foot range also were reported from the Sound. Stripers are moving east on the island with fish to 33 inches making their way to the Northport area this week.

VIDEOAnother round of trout stockings hit the island this week in lakes and river systems that were not stocked yet this year. Tune in for coverage and video of one of the stockings taking place. Even though the water temperatures around the island remain cold, stripers are beginning to feed in the back creeks and harbors. While these fish are on the smaller side, a report of a 32-pounder did surface in the city area last week.

Massachusetts kicked things up a few notches this week when they stocked some massive brown trout, weighing as much as 10 pounds, into select waters across the state; rumor has it that some broodstock brook trout are coming soon as well. We’ve seen a real smorgasbord of species this week ranging from kayak cod, to 40-inch stripers, to heavyweight largemouth bass.

VIDEOA countdown to tautog, trout and summer flounder may be difficult when the host can’t actually keep count! Sorry Jim, it’s actually March 27th, but that’s just another day closer to blackfish reopening on Tuesday, April 1. Striped bass reports on the uptick in the back waters of New Jersey, and with air temps expected into the 60s and 70s this weekend we expect to see even bigger things on the striper grounds very soon.

The New York Department of Environmental Conservation will begin their annual stockings this week with rainbow and brown trout and will follow up in the coming weeks with supplemental stockings for anglers to enjoy.

VIDEOSeveral herring runs are showing a good early push of alewives and the resident (holdover) stripers have taken notice as several tidal rivers and salt ponds have seen an uptick in striper activity this week. It’s also been a good week for freshwater bass guys, with the jerkbait leading the way. Trout stocking continues to justify angler efforts in Connecticut and Massachusetts, while Rhode-Islanders wait four more weeks to partake in the trout parade.
