1. IntroductionStem cells are cells with the unique capacity to replenish themselves and to act as source cells for the growth and development of multi-cellular organisms. Although multicellularity arose independently in animals and plants, both lineages evolved stem cells that have the ability to self-renew and to generate the various mature organs and tissues of the body.
