Giraffes, crows, and elephants are among the animals that appear to grieve for their dead. Some animals have been observed performing death rituals, including burial. It’s not just mammals; many colony-dwelling insects also have specific behaviors for dealing with dead members.

Lion cubs are born tiny and helpless, but they can already walk by two weeks and begin eating meat around three months. Baby lions need their mother’s protection for the first two to three years. After that, female offspring usually stay in the same pride as their mothers while the males strike out on their own. Lion mothers tend to keep a watchful eye on their cubs when they are young, but that doesn’t mean they don’t let the cubs learn how to do things on their own.

The docuseries “Secrets of the Penguins” by National Geographic captured footage of several rare penguin chicks for the very first time. Their parents are a mixed-species couple: a rockhopper mother and a macaroni penguin father. The resulting chicks, called “rockaronis,” successfully hatched and appeared to be healthy and thriving. The National Geographic series took place on the Falkland Islands.
