I introduce myself to the patients as a nurse practitioner (NP), but they still call me a doctor. Even worse, some of the staff refer to me as “doctor.” I imagine they do so out of respect, but no matter how many times I correct them, the erroneous title lives on. The reason I ask not to be called doctor is not because I have not earned my doctorate nor because I did not go to medical school; rather, it is because I want to be called a nurse.

Still lungs. Silent heart. Time of death: 2:40. CPR starts at 7:02. Eight minutes later, alive with a breathing tube. All seem to happen in the same room. The one in the corner, just out of view. With each admission,we all look around. We all think the same, without making a sound. “New admission in 604.”Eye contact shows fear,of what is in store. The best job we can,is all we can do. For the patient in front of us,at 7:02. Note: Times and room number were changed to protect patient privacy.

An Egg. Waiting to emerge from its enclosure. Ready to hatch into this world fresh and new. Ready to take in all there is to learn in the world around them. Preparing for all there is to conquer and accomplish on the quest ahead. In many ways, unaware of the beauty that is before them and the strides it will take in achieving a fulfilling existence but possessing all that is necessary for a fully successful being. A Larva.
