    State lawmakers are considering a bill that could improve police response times to emergencies like a school shooting. The legislation would allow schools to purchase silent panic alarms that teachers could wear, like a badge, around their neck. In the event of an emergency, they can push the button on the badge and it will immediately notify police.

    Memorial Day Weekend is the unofficial start to summer, and for many in New England, the green light to plant. At Moscarillo's on Albany Avenue in West Hartford, the staff have been preparing for this weekend. "This whole month we kind of call May mayhem," said Marissa Agostini, the greenhouse manager at Moscarillo's. They are expecting a lot of customers this weekend looking for everything from flowers to garden vegetables, soil to trees for their yard.

    UConn Health in Farmington has been working to reach underserved populations and educate them about PrEP for HIV. PrEP, or pre-exposure prophylaxis, is a medication people can take to prevent HIV, providing another alternative to condoms or abstinence. The FDA approved the first PrEP medication in 2012. Even after other drugs have come on the market, John Kajan, a patient at UConn Health, said he has noticed people still have reservations about it.

    Nurses at Backus Hospital in Norwich said they were sounding a "code red." They claim patient care is deteriorating. On Thursday, they called attention to it through an informational picket outside the hospital. The hospital currently has 100 open nursing positions and a 70% turnover rate over the last five years, according to Heather Brauth, a nurse at Backus.

    Hundreds of child care educators and parents attended rallies across the state on Wednesday to draw attention to what it would be like to have a "Morning Without Child Care" in Connecticut. In the crowd of more than 100 people who attended the rally in New Haven was Cora D'Alessandro. Her two young children attend a child care center in Branford. "We couldn't be happier, but we're paying more than our mortgage on childcare. It's about $4,500 a month," said D'Alessandro.
