Dear Editor, I welcomed Steuernagel and colleagues' review of sex and gender bias within cardiovascular research (16 September); a poignant article to follow on from reports of sexual offences rife amongst surgical teams. The volume of gender bias amongst research, clinical guidelines and our working lives is becoming increasingly apparent. However, is this a surprise? In our first years at medical school we are taught the physiology, pharmacology and anatomy of the “average 70 kg man”.
