UFour Nigerian nationals and one female in Basingstoke, have been convicted for defrauding major phone companies of over £400,000 in the United Kingdom. The convicts have been identified as Taofeeq Balogun, 30; Oluwadamilola Bolaji, 32; Taiwo Agusto, 43; Abidemi Adegbite, 56 and female among them, Carriba Johnson, 31.

The New South Wales Government in Australia has appointed Mr Bola Oyetunji of Nigerian descent as its next Auditor-General. Premier Chris Minns announced the appointment of Oyetunji as the next Auditor-General last Wednesday. Mr Oyetunji will be sworn into office in April when the current Auditor-General Margaret Crawford concludes her eight-year term. Mr Oyetunji was appointed following a merit-based recruitment process, a statement on the government website said.

United States President, Joe Biden and rival Donald Trump have each won enough delegates to clinch their party nominations in the 2024 presidential race assuring a rematch between the pair. The results in four statewide elections on Tuesday, March 12, were essentially a foregone conclusion as incumbent Biden and former president Trump had already seen off all primary challengers. Biden became his party’s presumptive nominee when he won enough delegates in Georgia.

The Ghana Parliament on Wednesday, 28 February, voted to passed a bill that further clamps down on the rights of LGBTQ people in the West African country. Gay sex was already punishable by up to three years imprisonment in the country. However, this new bill now also imposes a prison sentence of up to five years for the “wilful promotion, sponsorship, or support of LGBTQ+ activities”This proposal will also criminalise the distribution of materials that are considered supportive of LGBTQ rights.

News anchor, Don Lemon and Cable News Network have reportedly reached a financial agreement after he was fired from the company last year. After 17 years with CNN, it would be recalled that the longtime anchor announced his firing from the network in an X post in April 2023. “I was informed this morning by my agent I have been terminated by CNN. I am stunned,” Lemon had wrote.

Court filings have shown that a former senior Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation official has been slammed with bribery and tax-related charges in the United States. Federal Bureau of Investigation discovered that the official, identified as Paulinus Iheanacho Okoronkw, used his position as a general manager in NNPC’s upstream department to obtain at least $2.1 million in bribes. This made a jury recently returned a three-count indictment against Okoronkwo.

Aare Musulumi of Yorubaland, Edo and Delta States, Alhaji Dawud Makanjuola Akinola, has succeeded former governor Abiola Ajimobi as Aare of Ibadanland. The decision was reached on Monday, 26 February, at the Olubadan-in-council meeting. De-Damak, as the business tycoon is popularly called, will be installed alongside his wife, Alhaja Mariam Olubukola Akinola as Aare and Yeye Aare of Ibadanland respectively at a date to be agreed on by the stakeholders.
