1 Introduction The International Diabetes Federation reported that approximately 537 million adults were living with diabetes in 2021, with three in every four cases living in low- and middle-income countries [1]. The number of people with diabetes is projected to rise to 783 million by 2045 [1]. A microvascular complication of diabetes, diabetic retinopathy (DR) is globally a leading cause of visual loss and blindness [2].
