The latest farming income figures have been published by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), with the National Farmers’ Union (NFU) labelling the gains as “fragile”. The figures showed that the total income from farming (TIFF) in the UK for 2024 was £7.7 billion, up by £1.6 billion (26.4%) from 2023.

The Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has outlined plans to ban the process of bottom trawling in more Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the UK. Defra said the measures would “help protect rare marine animals” as well as seabeds from “indiscriminate and potentially irreversible” damage.

Government will scrap border checks on fruit and vegetables imported from the European Union in an early move to “ease trade” ahead of its new sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) deal with the EU. The Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) said the agreement will establish a UK-EU SPS zone, slashing costs, easing pressure on food prices and eliminating routine SPS border checks for food exports and imports.

UK ready meal manufacturer Charlie Bigham’s has released its annual results for the year ended 31st August 2024, reporting a rise in revenue of 8.8%. Total profit after tax increased from £4.7 million to £5.3 million. Sales grew by 8.8%, which Charlie Bigham’s said was driven by increased sales in existing customers’ stores and increasing store distribution within its existing customers.

In its full year results, food supplier Tate & Lyle reported a 4% increase in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA). The company reported EBITDA of £446 million, while adjusted revenue was down by 5% on the year to reach £1,512 million. New product revenue rose by 9%, and Tate & Lyle highlighted that sucralose saw “robust demand” with revenue and adjusted EBITDA up 16% and 18% respectively.
