The Alaska House of Representatives is asking Congress to fix a problem with a program that pays money to rural school districts affected by the decline of the timber industry. The Alaska House of Representatives passed a bill on Wednesday that is aimed at adding $275 million to fund public schools starting this summer. The House spent long floor sessions across three days this week, proposing amendments to, debating and voting on House Bill 69. The House passed the bill by a vote of 24 to 16. It would add $1,000 per student to the formula used to set state funding for K-12 schools.

One week after President Donald Trump signed an executive order renaming North America’s tallest mountain, the Alaska House of Representatives formally asked him to reverse himself. With a bipartisan 28-10 vote on Monday, the House approved House Joint Resolution 4, which requests that Trump and the federal government continue labeling the mountain as Denali. Trump’s order, slated to take effect within 30 days, would label the mountain as “Mount McKinley,” its official name between 1896 and 2015.

The Alaska House of Representatives will have two fewer Republicans, according to preliminary election results published by the Alaska Division of Elections after polls closed on Election Day. As of 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, the House was poised to stand at 20 Republicans, 14 Democrats and six independents, increasing the odds that the incoming House will be controlled by a predominantly Democratic coalition instead of the current predominantly Republican majority.
