1 Introduction Phenotypic traits often covary. The causes, consequences, and biological significance of trait covariation are complex and manifest distinct patterns across levels of temporal and biological scales. Trait covariation provides a numeric basis for partitioning the phenotype into semi-autonomous regions, where suites of traits covary internally but are independent of one another. This is referred to as modularity (Wagner, Pavlicev, and Cheverud 2007).

During the Reformations of the 16th and 17th centuries, populist movements like the Reformation Iconoclasts attempted to strip away the superfluous elements of Christian worship to move closer to the truth (Fig. 1). We draw on this analogy to discuss divergence-times of angiosperms for two purposes.

AbstractInterpretations of biodiversity patterns across timescales necessarily assume that fundamental processes of evolution do not change over time. A recurring pattern across a variety of biological datasets, from genomes to the fossil record, has shown evolutionary rates increasing toward the present or over shorter time scales, however, indicating potentially fundamental but unknown processes unifying evolutionary timescales.
