Destinations Volcanic landscapes and glowing night skies make the country an improbable yet ideal backdrop for a family getaway. BEFORE VISITING ICELAND, all I knew about it was it looked like outer space. This was the full extent of my knowledge of the country, so I said it whenever it came up: “I heard Iceland looks like outer space.” People would nod their heads in agreement and I thought it made me sound clever.

Motors Like tattoos and hairless cats, motorcycles have moved from the periphery toward the center of culture. I HAVE AN 8-by-10 photograph taken of me from the first time I rode a motorcycle. It was the early ’80s, and I was on a red and blue, knobby-tired, Honda Z50 minibike. It was visiting day at White Oaks sleepaway camp, where I spent that entire summer. I hated camp.

LIVING IN NEW YORK, everything was a thing — a treacherous, slogful grind of a thing. Fortunately, my family and I moved to Paris last September, and what I’ve come to learn is that everything in Paris is also a thing. Only here it’s a gloriously historic, golden-plated, impossibly tailored, intellectually pleasing, all-five-senses-turned-on kind of thing. Traveling through Paris, just getting from point A to point B is such a wonderful event, and today is no different.

I AM TURNING old this spring, but, despite this reality, as a recent transplant to the most beautiful city in the world, I’m feeling pretty good — which is new for me. This is perhaps a product of a dysfunctional personal emotional management system, and certainly a byproduct of ’70s-style parenting and ’80s suburban excess. The combination has left me in a state of chronic, low-grade discontent.
