Unsurprisingly, lots of families on TV are dysfunctional. If you've got a sitcom, then a dysfunctional family can be a reliable source of humor (see The Simpsons for one of the best examples), while if a show’s a drama, then such dysfunction can be taken more seriously, and drive conflict. It's been the case for traditional television for decades, and even on HBO – which can't often be called "traditional" – families get pretty dysfunctional.

Given Clint Eastwood has been around for a while (he celebrated his 95th birthday in 2025), it’s not too surprising that he’s directed his fair share of historical movies about real-life people. Simplicity isn't bad (and some of those films have more complex themes), but not all sci-fi films go for that kind of thing.

You’ve got Enter the Dragon, The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, Police Story, and even a recent Best Picture winner, Everything Everywhere All at Once, which is more than just a martial arts movie, sure, but can still be classified as one regardless.
