I am the morning meteorologist at WAVY TV in Portsmouth, VA. I love talking about weather as much as weather itself!

Last night there were some strong storms moving through the region. I came into work early to monitor the storms. I was impressed with how much lightning they contained. They dropped a quick quarter to a half an inch of rain over the Metro area. These storms moved northeast through the Eastern Shore. Then they moved out of the area. We then had some spotty showers through the mid-morning. Today we have a couple of cold fronts merging to our northwest.

I think we are still going to have some quiet weather today despite some isolated pop-up showers or storms. However, the bigger area of rain will arrive with a cold front tonight into tomorrow. Let’s talk about it…Today we have high pressure offshore with a warm front bubbling up from the south. At the same time there is a cool front slowly getting closer to us from the north. Today the warm front will steadily push to the north.

This morning we started off with lots of sunshine over the region. It was beautiful out there as the air was dry and the skies were mostly clear. Today we have a “cool” front offshore with high pressure just to the west. We’ll be warm today due to the strong sunshine. High temps will rise to the low 80s this afternoon. However, the dew points are low. They are in the 50s. So that will make it very comfortable today. There will be a light wind out of the west. Water temps are warming too.

Yesterday we had 2 reported funnel clouds near the edges of the viewing area. One of them likely turned into a tornado at one point. We did have some video of the funnel cloud near Jamesville, NC. Here are a couple of screen shots from that video: Apparently, there was some other video that the National Weather Service viewed that did show a touchdown. However, there was no damage reported. Therefore, we’re not sure if they will go out and survey that area.

Over the last 48 hours we got some of that much-needed rainfall over the region. We had a big swath yesterday which put down about a quarter to three-quarters of an inch. There was some heavy rain and a few storms. Then we had another round this morning which had a few downpours. There are a few features that created the showers and storms recently. They are still in-play today. First off, there is a stationary front just to our west.

We'll have a mix of sun and clouds today. There won't be the widespread rain like yesterday, but there will be clusters of thunderstorms this afternoon. A few strong/severe storms will be possible. https://t.co/0P8PlBZXFG

Still lots of rain over the region. Some very heavy rain coming up through Virginia Beach. Showers should break up this afternoon, but the Flood Watch continues until late tonight. https://t.co/gLfcT8PNlu
