Over the last couple of weeks we have had some pockets of heat, but there haven’t been any long stretches. We even had a really cool day recently on the 16th. However, it looks like we are going to go into a fairly hot pattern for a while going forward. Yesterday was the start of this hot stretch. We ended up in the lower 90s with the heat index over 100. It was ok if you were in the shade with the nice breeze. However, if you were in the sun and out of the breeze then you were cookin.

Today we are going to have some pretty rough heat and humidity over the region. We have a warm front to our north with high pressure building in stronger just offshore. There is a cool front over the Midwest that will provide us some relief, but that won’t get here until Thursday night. Today we will have lots of sunshine through the day. I can’t remember the last time we had a full day of sunshine. Along with that we’ll have a southwest wind running at 10-15mph with gusts to 25mph.

Over the last few days there has been a lot of rain over the region. During my birthday party Saturday it rained almost the entire time. Over the last 2 days there was a lot of rain over northeast North Carolina and a few spots in southeast Virginia. Elizabeth City had over 5 inches. Wow! This created some flooding down that way for a time. We had a few more showers yesterday evening. Then there were some more scattered showers this morning during the AM commute. These moved out by around 8:30am.

Before I go into the forecast, I do want to talk a little about yesterday. We didn’t have much rain in the area during the afternoon other than some isolated showers or storms. The forecast was more focused on a large cluster of showers and storms in the evening anyway. However, the big cluster of storms ended up being much smaller than forecast. It affected a few inland areas, part of the Peninsula, and the lower Eastern Shore.

The weather lately feels like we are already in the dog days of Summer. However, Summer doesn’t officially start until June 20th, and the dog days of Summer are usually more towards August. Having said that… Yesterday there was a lot of heat and humidity. However, my temperature forecast miffed a bit. That was due to a neat little quirk in the weather. The area of low pressure that was supposed to keep moving northeast instead lingered just offshore.

We'll have lots of clouds today. There will be some scattered showers this morning. A break for a while. Then scattered storms forming late in the day. Highs in the 80s. Quieter weather and slightly drier Wed/Thur. https://t.co/KKbcYSslh4

A few showers this morning. Then some clearing this afternoon. Highs near 80. Unfortunately, there will be some scattered storms over the weekend. A few strong storms will be possible each day. https://t.co/8F173cObmA

Still dry today with lots of sun. Some haze. Could be a little bit of smoky smell. This is from smoke from the Canadian Wildfires. High temps in the 80s. Area of low pressure forms to our south tomorrow. Some rain expected. Especially over N. Carolina. https://t.co/tWpbNLvcZ3
