For six years, the building that once housed The Coffee Cup, a beloved neighborhood diner in St. Paul’s North End, sat empty. A devastating fire nearly took the building out, and eventually the owners reopened with the same menu on Randolph Avenue in the Macaclester-Groveland neighborhood. But neighbors had lost their hangout and place for a morning coffee and generous and inexpensive breakfasts.

The restaurant next door to the Palace Theatre in downtown St. Paul is finally reopening after extensive water damage caused its closure last fall. The new name for the restaurant, which will be run by First Avenue, is Palace Pub. Wrestaurant at the Palace is no more. “After months of repairs and reflection, we made the decision to officially close that chapter,” the First Avenue folks said in a news release.

Last week, dining out was a hodgepodge of family time, work meetings and checking out a refreshed space on Lake Minnetonka for next year’s patio guide. I also ate a quick meal at Surly before a concert, and I’m loving their new streamlined menu. I forgot to take photos, but the mole pork bowl is great, as is the falafel.

The past few weeks have been a flurry of gardening, time with friends and family, and cabin visits. Between that, I managed to fit in a few trips to Eagan to run errands. Since I spend so much time in the second-ring suburb, I thought I’d try out a few new-to-me places, and I wasn’t disappointed.
