1 Introduction The net zero approach to climate change is attaining worldwide recognition. With this goal in mind, there has been much discussion about whether global temperature will drop shortly after emissions abatement or if temperature commitment is already “locked in” and, if so, to what extent (MacDougall et al., 2020; Matthews & Caldeira, 2008; Matthews & Weaver, 2010; Zhou et al., 2021).

AbstractThe stability and resilience of the Earth system and human well-being are inseparably linked1,2,3, yet their interdependencies are generally under-recognized; consequently, they are often treated independently4,5. Here, we use modelling and literature assessment to quantify safe and just Earth system boundaries (ESBs) for climate, the biosphere, water and nutrient cycles, and aerosols at global and subglobal scales.
