Eric Shin is the National Symphony Orchestra’s principal percussionist, but when he isn’t tapping out rhythms at the Kennedy Center, he’s beating the drum for a different passion: Korean food. Shin founded the local fast-casual chain SeoulSpice eight years ago, and it’s grown to seven locations. Now the company has gotten an investment from the Invus Group, which previously helped Cava grow into a major brand. The money will allow SeoulSpice to expand to other cities.

Georgia Avenue is the artery that links the three vibrant Northwest DC neighborhoods of Petworth, Park View, and 16th Street Heights. Historically home to mainly Black families, the area has become more diverse—and gentrified—with trendy local businesses popping up along busy Upshur Street, 14th Street, and Georgia Avenue. On the dense side streets of Petworth and Park View, blocks of brick rowhouses climb up gentle hills, each front porch a little higher than the one next door.

For decades, David Tatel, a former federal judge on the DC Circuit Court, worked to conceal something significant about himself: He is blind. Once a sighted person who lost his vision early in his career, the lawyer and civil-rights champion developed stealthy workarounds to initially hide or downplay his lack of sight—from using the clicking sounds of a colleague’s heels in navigating a building to asking communications offices not to mention his blindness in press releases.
