Echo Park -- Firefighters knocked down a garage fire tonight that had spread into a one-story home, according to the L.A. Fire Department. The occupants of the home in the 1500 block of Mohawk Street were able to get out after the blaze began at about 9 pm. Crews attacked flames in the garage while also battling fire in the attic of the home and working to salvage belongings inside The blaze was extinguished in 29 minutes with 32 firefighters on scene, said an LAFD Alert.

Councilmember Ysabel Jurado today placed one of her staff members on unpaid leave following reports that a worker had been arrested on suspicion of an assault with a deadly weapon during Sunday night's protests in Downtown Los Angeles.
