AbstractThe mechanical properties of cytoplasm are crucial for cellular functions. While active processes significantly alter cytoplasmic viscoelasticity, the physical mechanisms remain elusive. Here, we model the cytoplasm as a colloidal suspension subject to passive and active noise, coarse-grained as an effective temperature. We show that a jammed cytoplasm transitions from a solid to a liquid phase at a critical effective temperature.

AbstractLittle research has been conducted on the relationship between statin use and the survival of head and neck cancer patients. This study assessed whether statin use after head and neck cancer diagnosis is associated with overall survival among patients in the U.S. military health system (MHS) that provides universal health care to its beneficiaries. The study included 1842 patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) from MHS.

1 Introduction According to a recent epidemiological survey by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), ≈536 million adults worldwide were estimated to be afflicted with diabetes in 2021, with this number projected to surpass 700 million by 2045.[1] The alarming prevalence of diabetes not only imposes a heavy medical burden but also ranks as a leading cause of death globally,[2] emphasizing the pertinent need to better manage diabetes and its related complications.

Popular Summary Quantum key distribution (QKD) enables two remote parties to establish a shared secret key even in the presence of an eavesdropper that has access to a quantum computer. The obtained key then can be used to encrypt secret messages. Continuous-variable QKD (CV-QKD) protocols with discrete modulation (DM) are promising candidates for commercial implementations because the required components are already used in current telecommunications infrastructure.
