We didn’t have television when I was a youngster. I was entering high school before we got our first TV set. But we didn’t lack for entertainment. I loved that old table model radio with an aerial wire that brought in a selection of AM stations, including local station KYSM in Mankato, Minn, along with WCCO in Minneapolis and St. Paul and other stations. Programs were far more entertaining than anything you see nowadays on those fancy flat screens.

These days it seems as though every time a member of the law enforcement profession fires a weapon or engages in high-speed pursuit, it is accompanied by howls of protest from someone in the community at large. Time was, when I slipped on the ice or lost my balance and tumbled to the ground, I’d hop back to my feet, dust myself off and get back to whatever I was doing — maybe being a little more careful. Even finely tuned athletes do this routinely. You can watch a football or basketball game on TV and see bodies go flying to the ground or floor. Most of the time they scramble back up and get back to the play quickly.

For the first time in 226 years, a sitting president of the United States has a felony conviction on his record. I suppose, however, that whether or not that amounts to a hill of beans depends on whether you are a MAGA fan or a Trump-hater. Donald J. Trump was found guilty on 34 felony counts last year in New York, as a result of hush money payments over alleged sexual misconduct many years ago.
