Five-time All-Star pitcher Yu Darvish will begin a rehab assignment against the Aviators on Wednesday at Las Vegas Ballpark. Darvish, a right-hander with the San Diego Padres, will pitch for their Triple-A affiliate, the El Paso Chihuahuas, against the Aviators in a game starting at 6:35 p.m.Darvish has been suffering from right elbow inflammation and is working his way back to a return to the major leagues. For his career, he is 110-88 with a 3.58 ERA and 2,007 strikeouts.

Boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao will come out of retirement after nearly four years to fight in Las Vegas on July 19, according to an ESPN report. The 46-year-old Pacquiao (62-8-2, 39 knockouts) will challenge the 29-year-old Mario Barrios (29-2-1, 18 KOs) for the WBC welterweight (147-pound) championship at a venue to be determined. Pacquiao, a former champion in eight weight classes, is scheduled to be inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in June.

The Seattle Seahawks waived former UNLV linebacker Jackson Woodard on Tuesday after he participated in their rookie minicamp over the weekend. Woodard signed with the Seahawks as an undrafted free agent, joining former Rebels receiver Ricky White III, who was a seventh-round pick by Seattle. Woodard earned Mountain West defensive player of the year honors last season after amassing 135 tackles, 3½ sacks and four interceptions.

Offensive lineman Tiger Shanks became UNLV’s highest-ever selection in the CFL draft Tuesday when he was picked in the first round (No. 5 overall) by the Montreal Alouettes. Offensive lineman Brett Boyko held the previous program record after being taken in the second round (No. 14 overall) by the BC Lions in 2015. Shanks is the sixth Rebel to be selected in the CFL draft. Shanks earned first-team all-Mountain West recognition the past two seasons.

Coronado basketball standout Mason Abittan has reopened his recruitment after signing with UNLV basketball in November, and five Rebels have officially entered the transfer portal. All of these decisions were announced before UNLV hired coach Josh Pastner this week to replace the fired Kevin Kruger. Abittan averaged 19.3 points per game at Coronado this season, earning first-team All-Southern Nevada honors.
