According to a road report issued by Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC), a federal government body, the Alaska Highway is closed due to a fuel spill at Toad River south of Muncho Lake. An update on the closure is anticipated at 3 p.m. The closure is at KM 668 of the highway. Highway 37, the other road route from British Columbia into the Yukon, may also be seeing traffic disruptions today.

Porter Creek residents witnessed an event that was a little cliché but entirely admirable as the Whitehorse Fire Department deployed a ladder truck to save a spooked cat from a tall tree. Tom Patrick was in the Boxwood Crescent area on April 2 when the fire department arrived at around 5 p.m. in search of the cat. He says it was a roughly 90-minute effort for four firefighters to get the cat out of the tree but they were able to get a handle on it and bring it down the ladder.

Professionals affiliated with BC Children’s Hospital brought information on their cutting-edge health science work to Yukon schools and to the public at MacBride Museum. The visiting programs conducted by the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute were the Mini Med School held at high schools around Whitehorse and the Mini Science Night at the museum on March 27.

A Dawson City man has spent the winter turning freshly fallen snow into a mighty fortification outside his home. John Hanulik started stacking blocks of compressed snow into a castle complete with a tower and rampart in early November 2024 and has worked almost every day since to get it to where it’s at. He’s dedicated himself to a building project like this in past winters but noted that the tower he accesses using a step ladder is new this year.
