Lloyd G. Carter, 76, a journalist and lawyer whose reporting of an environmental disaster at the Kesterson National Wildlife Refuge refuge near Los Banos in 1984 sent shockwaves through the Reagan administration, died last week in Fresno. By Jim Guy Special to GV Wire Mr. Carter, who had a vast understanding of California water issues, passed away in hospice care, according to the Fresno County coroner. Information on funeral services was not available.

Fresno had two runs at breaking hot-weather temperature records in July, but it’s doubtful anyone is complaining that it didn’t happen. Now, cooler days are ahead, promises the National Weather Service in Hanford. This month, the thermometer also nearly broke the hottest all-time one day record — 115 degrees — but a “rounding error” saved that century-old mark as well (more about that later). Records are safe for the next week, as the city experiences a relative cool snap of 90-degree days.

Fresno police on Monday continued to investigate the fatal shooting of a man Sunday night in southwest Fresno. Sgt. Felipe Uribe said the department learned of the incident just before 9 p.m. in the area of South Modoc Street and East Strother Avenue, where officers found a wounded man in an alley. He had been hit in the torso by more than one bullet. Officers also found bullet casings nearby. Police and emergency workers administered first aid, but the victim died at the scene.

A former Fresno County resident sentenced to death for a Sacramento-area murder died early Wednesday in a California Department of Corrections medical facility in Vacaville, the California Department of Corrections reported. Glenn Wade Jennings, 71, was on the state’s death row for the 2004 fatal stabbing of liquor store owner Kulwant Sufi. After the attack, Jennings ran away with the cash register.
