WASHINGTON — An American intelligence assessment of the Ecuadorian presidential election, set for Sunday, concluded that a reelection of the incumbent president would better serve U.S. national security interests over the challenger. The assessment comes as the Trump administration mulls establishing a permanent U.S. military presence in the South American country, once known as the "island of peace," to help battle violent gangs, CBS News has learned.

Army Secretary Dan Driscoll has replaced FBI Director Kash Patel as acting head of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, four sources familiar with the move told CBS News. Driscoll will stay in his job as secretary of the army while serving as acting ATF director. Patel was named acting head of the agency in February, two Justice Department sources told CBS News at the time. Like Driscoll, Patel ran both agencies at the same time while he was in charge.
