Originally scheduled for last week, but rescheduled due to the threat of Helene, an evening with the Violent Femmes (no opening act) was a satisfying trip back in time for the sold-out crowd at the House of Blues. The Femmes played songs from their second album, Hallowed Ground, to mark the record's 40th anniversary.

Well, the crowd at the Kia Center most certainly did, and crepuscular post-punk trio Cigarettes After Sex brought the monochrome thrills. No window dressing, no gimmicks, just sonorous longing and poisoned-apple hooks.

On a hot and sticky Saturday — though no rain to speak of, luckily — a legion of punk bands old and new rolled into the Central Florida Fairgrounds for Punk in the Park. The lineup was a who's who of legends like TSOL, Dwarves and Black Flag, bolstered by younger ragers like The Bronx and 430 Steps, and Alkaline Trio headlining the day.

Nostalgia? Pffffft. Despite naming their band "Pylon Reenactment Society," this band is a living and breathing creative whirlwind. Led by OG Pylon frontwoman Vanessa Briscoe Hay, this Athens quartet made their long-awaited return to Orlando for the first time in years — as the packed-out house at Will's Pub attested to. PRS showed off both all the vintage Pylon hits (given vivid new life) and sprinkled in plenty of songs from their new album Magnet Factory.
