The NTSB preliminary report notes that multiple witnesses watched the accident unfold as Holland approached a landing on Runway 8 at Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, Virginia, where he was scheduled to perform in a weekend airshow. Holland flew his single-seat MX Aircraft MXS (serial number 001) from Tennessee, and leveled off about 50 feet above the runway after making a normal approach.

Since rolling out the technology in Alaska, the FAA has expanded weather camera coverage to include hundreds of locations spanning 24 states. At each location, a cluster of up to four cameras upload images on a 10-minute cycle, allowing pilots to observe visibility and precipitation at a given location from anywhere in the world. The FAA weather camera network—which was built out and continues to expand based on popular demand from pilots—can now be viewed within ForeFlight.

On September 19, 2016, Zheng (Julie) Wang completed a monthlong circumnavigation in a Cirrus SR22. AOPA reported she was living in Florida at the time, working as chief flight instructor for a Part 141 flight school, and was recognized by AOPA China as the first woman born in China to complete a solo flight around the world—a distinction that came with a prize worth around $150,000 at the time. Litigation ensued.

Mike MacDonald recounted the incident near La Paz, Mexico, on social media. He was flying a biologist offshore at 1,500 feet to survey ocean wildlife “when suddenly, our engine became dead quiet.” MacDonald filled in a few additional details in a video chat three days later, using the same iPhone 15 that figured in his rescue, along with a Spidertracks aviation tracking system used by his employer to document MacDonald’s work and calculate his paycheck.
