There’s a lot of uncertainty in Washington right now, with everything from the rulemaking process to the status of government funding up in the air. While there is a lot happening outside of our control, we can’t lose sight of what we can control, and that’s reaffirming the credit union difference at every possible opportunity. Credit unions need to be there for their members. And we are here for credit unions.

Kicking off a new year always fills me with hope and renewed energy. That’s especially true this year, as our movement steels itself for skirmishes big and small. Given all the legislative and regulatory challenges that credit unions are facing, we need to be vigilant not to allow fragmentation or infighting to creep in. The solution lies in reinforcing and leveraging the unified advocacy machine that has been meticulously built over decades.

It was great welcoming the 119th Congress last week, kicking off a critical year in advocacy with vital introductions and re-introductions to policymakers and staff. Seventeen leagues representing 32 states and dozens of credit unions joined America’s Credit Unions in the nation’s capital for swearing-in day activities.

A pro-credit union majority in the 119th Congress takes office in the coming days, but with several major challenges looming for Congress, credit union advocacy is as important as ever. Key provisions of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act—President Donald Trump’s signature piece of legislation in 2017—are set to expire in 2025. The incoming administration will look to continue many of these tax cuts, while also prioritizing government spending cuts.

It was a pleasure meeting with league leaders and advocates at the American Association of Credit Union Leagues (AACUL) Winter Conference this week. The theme “comprehensive collaboration” perfectly captures the important partnership between America’s Credit Unions and leagues. This relationship ultimately strengthens the credit union movement with a unified voice that no other industry can match. Leagues are instrumental in our advocacy efforts.

It can be uncharacteristically quiet in the nation’s capital during the post-election “lame duck” session before the end of the year. Even more so after a presidential election, when most eyes are on next year, the next Congress, the next assignment in the next administration. Both chambers of Congress and their committees will look different next year. Retirements, administration appointments, and filling those vacancies mean new leaders and new staff.
