    The calls became louder as the season went on during boys volleyball matches for Hopkins, a program that co-ops with St. Louis Park and Minnehaha Academy. Whimsical in nature, typical of the irreverence of high school boys, but heard every time Owen Barnett soared above the net for a kill. A call of "O B Schmittman" would echo throughout the gym, followed by another. Barnett, a senior outside hitter, knows who coined the nickname but claims no idea of the origin.

    By Jim Paulsen Winston Wisely pitched a complete game, scattering seven hits and allowing two runs, and shortstop Issac Iten went 3-for-3 with four runs scored to propel Mahtomedi to a 6-2 victory over Mankato East in the Class 3A baseball state championship at Target Field on Saturday. Both teams were a little wobbly to start the game. Mahtomedi took advantage of two walks and a base hit to take a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

    In the postmatch interview room following Eden Prairie's gutsy five-set victory over Rogers in the championship match of the first MSHSL-sanctioned boys volleyball state tournament, Eagles captain and senior right-side hitter Avi Kommalapati let slip the secret to his team's success. Not yelling or trash-talk or posturing. Smiles.

    The finalists for the first MSHSL-sanctioned boys volleyball tournament are set. Rogers, the No. 3 seed in the field, spotted No. 2 Eastview a victory in the first set of Wednesday's first semifinal match at the University of St. Thomas, then won two close sets before closing out the match in the fourth set for a 22-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-19 victory. Grant Anderson had 20 kills and Ethan Pierson added 13 for the Royals. Setter Trent Welle distributed the ball confidently for Rogers (26-1).

    The Minnesota Twins Community Fund and the Minnesota All Sports Alliance have announced the finalists 2025 Mr. Baseball and Ms. Softball awards. The finalists, who represent the top senior players in the state, were determined by a panel of high school and college coaches. The winners will be announced Sunday during a ceremony at Target Field. The Twins are playing in Houston that day.
