Marion County Commission unanimously rejected a rezoning request for a 73-home development on a former landfill. Residents voiced concerns about soil contamination and unsuitable building conditions on the 27-acre site. The developer stated the landfill was properly closed and further environmental compliance would be addressed. Commissioners cited public interest and incompatibility with surrounding properties as reasons for denial.

Marion County government is planning to widen Southwest 38th Street from two lanes to four lanes between Southwest 80th Avenue to the west and Southwest 43rd Court to the east. But one part of the project — the stretch of road that is east of Southwest 60th Avenue and west of Southwest 46th Avenue — has become somewhat controversial. The county's preferred widening plan, drafted by a consultant, calls for taking 10 feet of land from the Timberwood subdivision boundary.

The Ocala City Council will make the final decision on the project's approval. A major development — including several types of housing, commercial space, and perhaps even two hotels — could be coming to southwest Ocala.

A developer on Monday withdrew his request for a controversial zoning change in north Marion County. The move came after a testy back-and-forth between the developer and his representatives and some members of the Marion County Commission. Three commissioners signaled their intent to vote against the proposed zoning change, in large part because they found the plan for the land — up to 310 single-family homes on 77.52 acres — too dense and too incompatible with the surrounding area.
