The Authority of ScripturePreaching has to be the first way we lead as pastors, in one sense, because it’s inherent within our position, within our role. It’s a qualification that we have to be able to teach. When you look at the pastoral letters to Timothy and Titus, they are full of things like, Exhort the people. Devote yourself to public reading of Scripture, teaching, reproving, exhortation. All of these things have this connotation that the Bible commands us to.

The Problem: An Unnecessary DisconnectPreaching is leadership in Christ’s cause. We need to train pastors who will lead the church on its mission in the next generation to connect their preaching with leadership. I have become convinced, through the study and practice of pastoral ministry for over thirty years in a variety of denominational contexts, that an unbiblical divorce often occurs between the pastoral priorities of preaching and leadership more generally.

These days it’s not uncommon for leaders to overpromise and underdeliver. When those in positions of influence make guarantees and don’t follow through, it’s typically referred to as “lip service.” Israel’s leaders in the Old Testament were guilty of this, and Jesus indicted the religious leaders of his day as hypocrites for doing the very same thing: “This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me” (Matt. 15:8; cf. Isa. 29:13).
