Southern Illinois is hoping for a more settled weather pattern following a four day stretch of torrential rainfall last week. “They received three to four months of rain in just a short amount of time,” said Freese-Notis Weather meteorologist Paul Otto during a Tuesday visit with RFD Radio. “It was all due to a failed cold front.”And that provided a “running board” for a training of thunderstorms to occur over the same locations.

How does DTN agriculture meteorologist John Baranick describe weather conditions for southern Illinois this week? “We’ve got just day after day after day of rain potential,” he said during a Tuesday visit with RFD Radio. “The Storm Prediction Center even has a little bit of severe weather potential mixed in.”Most of the state should receive rain on Wednesday. “That’s where we have the most widespread coverage,” Baranick said.

Illinois State Climatologist Trent Ford expects above-normal precipitation as Illinois farmers roll into spring planting season in April. “That’s the biggest signal here,” he told the RFD Radio Network. A series of weather systems passed over the state the last week of March and produced everything from strong winds and hail to some heavy downpours of rain.
