Meteorological summer kicks off June 1. "The first full week of June, the outlook is showing the best chances of below-normal precipitation for the state," Illinois State Climatologist Trent Ford said during a Tuesday visit with RFD Radio. "Maybe a little warmer and drier patter."That's welcome information for southern Illinois, which has experienced heavy rain this spring. Northern Illinois, however, continues to see the impact of a lack of soil moisture.

Temperatures will approach or exceed 90 degrees in Illinois this week, but it will be short-lived. “It’s only going to be around for 24 to 36 hours and that’s basically on Thursday,” said Freese-Notis Weather Meteorologist Paul Otto during a Tuesday visit with RFD Radio. The Metro East area will likely surpass 90 Thursday, along with other southwest Illinois locations. “But a cold front is on the back end of that and that will save us from an early summer,” Otto said.

Natalie Pratt could teach a class on the art of public speaking. “I do not fear being in front of a crowd,” the Amboy High School senior said. “It helped that I started doing the local theater program at our school when I was in third grade.”Pratt is the Illinois Farm Bureau Actively Engaged Student of the Month for May. Your browser does not support the audio element. She honed her public speaking skills in 4-H, winning the state contest an impressive four times.

The weather pattern has flipped in Illinois. Some drier days are in the forecast for the next couple of weeks. “Most of the state is pretty well stocked with soil moisture,” said DTN agriculture meteorologist John Baranick during a Tuesday visit with RFD Radio. Plenty of rain impacted the state during April, especially in the southern portion. However, less active weather will be the main feature through mid-May. “There’s really nothing going on that would cause a bunch of rain to fall,” he said.
