On 9 November 2023, the Chicago City Council passed the Chicago Paid Leave and Paid Sick and Safe Leave Ordinance1(the Ordinance). The Ordinance takes effect on 31 December 2023, and replaces Chicago's current paid sick leave ordinance.2 Under the Ordinance, starting 1 January 2024, Chicago employees are entitled to up to 80 hours of paid time off in a 12-month period, with 40 hours allocated to paid sick leave and 40 hours allocated to general paid leave.

On 11 August 2023, the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM)1 to implement the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA),2 a new law that protects the rights of pregnant and postpartum workers and applicants.3 With the NPRM, the EEOC is providing a framework for how it will interpret the PWFA, including its defined terms, while also highlighting various potential forms of reasonable accommodations for covered workers.
