    While the 166th Harrison County Fair technically doesn’t begin until Sunday, June 22, activities are already underway at the fairgrounds in Corydon, and they will continue to increase in the coming days. That’s in part because the Harrison County 4-H Fair began yesterday (Tuesday) and will run through June 27. Additionally, the Midway will come to life on Saturday, rather than Tuesday as initially planned.

    Another group of both youth and adults were deemed graduates of the Leadership Harrison County program on May 18. A combined graduation and awards ceremony took place at the Lanesville Heritage Community Center. Nathan Broom, executive director for Leadership Harrison County, told the graduates and their family and friends that this year’s participants encouraged him about the future. “I get to be with some of the best, brightest people of Harrison County … both adults and youth,” he said.

    During a special meeting May 14, the South Harrison Community School Corp. Board of Trustees hired a familiar face to the school district as associate superintendent. Nathan Freed got the nod with a 5-2 vote. Karen Lopp made the motion to hire him with Larry Hauswald seconding the motion. Steve Simler, Barb Smith and board president Mary Mathes also voted in the affirmative, while Nick Evans and Deneen Stewart voted against the motion.

    Two services to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice took place in Corydon on Saturday ahead of Memorial Day. The first was hosted by VFW Old Capitol Post 2950 at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Corydon. Post chaplain Bob Raisor gave the opening prayer, while Post quartermaster Wayne Wilkinson welcomed the attendees and introduced the speaker, Caz Sliwa. Sliwa chose to speak about the late Thomas Mitchem, who was born in 1874 in Corydon and attended nearby St. Paul AME Church.

    Next year’s election in Harrison County could look at little different with regard to polling places. The Harrison County Election board, during its first meeting of 2025 on May 7, took care of some housekeeping which included election of officers — Nate Adams, the Democrat representative, was elected chairman, and Larry Shickles, the Republican representative, was elected vice chair — then delved into discussion about the 2026 election.
