A traffic enforcement plan was implemented by Madison Police Department in May with a goal of decreasing accidents and increasing police visibility. Police Chief Shawn Scudder updated the city’s Board of Public Works and Safety on that operation at its meeting Monday. Scudder said there were 790 traffic stops in May, an exponential increase over April when there were 71. He said so far there has been a positive impact with accidents decreased by 12% this May compared to one year ago in May.

Otto Kling began a 1,050 mile bicycle trip to Sebring, Florida, leaving 7 a.m. Sunday from Bicentennial Park in downtown Madison. Kling, who covered 150 miles on the first day, is using the trip to raise awareness and raise funds for children battling cancer at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. He’s also hoping to show what can be achieved through fitness and nutrition. Kling, a 2018 graduate of Madison Consolidated High School, participated in football, track and wrestling for the Cubs.

The two-year-old Jefferson County Health and Human Relations Commission is in the process of developing a strategic plan for the nine-member group that was established by the County Commissioners in 2023. Gigi Christie, who joined the commission in February, reported on work by the strategic plan subcommittee that wants to develop a two-question survey for county residents. “We’re trying to connect people from throughout the county to find out how we can best be serving them,” she said.
