AbstractScientific reconstructions of the behavior of the ancestors of modern humans are informed by evidence from fossils, ancient artifacts, genomes of ancient and modern peoples, and the behavior of living nonhuman primates. Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) and bonobos (Pan paniscus) play an especially important role in these efforts because they are the closest living relatives of modern humans.
