The picture above shows Eros unloading outside the Royal Dorset Yacht Club in 1992. It was the final visit by the German flagged vessel. Former Weymouth Harbour Master Peter Tambling told the Echo in 2015 that she had been a regular visitor to the port since 1987, and it was her captain’s last voyage. Mr Tambling said prior to her departure he invited the captain into the club for a farewell drink.

The incident is immortalised in this Claud Hider postcard from a photograph he took in 1929. A newspaper report from June 22, 1929, tells how events unfolded. At that time motorists proceeding along the main Axminster- Bridport Road, near Charmouth were startled to encounter a lion roaming along the roadside. Those who could believe the evidence of their eyes stepped on the accelerator and gave the animal a wide berth.
