Mike eyes me suspiciously, a smoldering cigarette in hand. I’m pretty sure he’s high. His eyelids are heavy. His speech is often slurred. And he admits, sitting at a picnic table outside a Jersey Shore pizzeria, that he’s been addicted to heroin since he was 15. He’s not sure he wants to talk with me. “Nobody wants me to do this,” he says with a little laugh.
