    THUNDER BAY — The Circle K convenience store on the corner of Arthur and Franklin streets sees the most loss from criminal activity of any location between Thunder Bay and North Bay. In 2024, the south-side store saw losses from theft, robbery and other criminal activity in the amount of $82,000. And within the first quarter of this year, the store has already experienced $21,000 in shrinkage with that number expected to quadruple by the end of 2025.

    THUNDER BAY — The Thunder Bay Police Service was in the black for the 2024 fiscal year. At the Thunder Bay Police Service Board meeting on Tuesday, the director of finance and facilities, Dawn Paris, reported the service had a $300,000 positive variance for the year ended on Dec. 31, 2024. Net operating expenses came in at $56.9 million compared to the budget of $57.2 million.

    THUNDER BAY — About 250 Alstom employees could be laid off starting in June if more contracts aren’t secured before then for the Thunder Bay plant. “We're laying off so many right now because again, the LRV (light rail vehicle) streetcar contract has come to completion and we currently have about just over 200 members working on that line," said Unifor Local 1075 president Justin Roberts, representing workers at the facility.

    THUNDER BAY — A Thunder Bay man charged in the death of 63-year-old Richard Jung has been sentenced to six years in jail. Randy Andrews, 25, pleaded guilty to manslaughter last June and was sentenced in December to six years in jail minus credit for time served pre-trial. Andrews has a little more than four years left to serve. Thunder Bay police responded to reports of an assault at a residence in the 200 block of Robertson Street the morning of Sept. 20, 2023.
