The Sierra Foothill League has towered over the greater Sacramento region as a super league for high school athletics. Football has been king in that league for years, and it has been the best collection of teams locally in girls and boys basketball in recent seasons. And of course, there is softball. The CIF Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs start at home sites next Tuesday for Division VII, the smallest enrollment schools, and on Wednesday for Divisions I through VI.

Tim Plough’s heart nearly dropped to the turf on Saturday afternoon. A joyous day of football and community in Yolo County brightened a day heavy on ominous cloud cover, and then the UC Davis coach had a sudden sense of real dread and real storm clouds. Plough watched helplessly as his fast-emerging quarterback went down early in the spring game and stayed down. The coach made the slow walk from the sideline to the far side of the field to check on Caden Pinnick.

FCS-level football is the real deal, coaches and players will tell you, including those from Sacramento State and UC Davis, two of the better FCS programs since 2018. On Saturday afternoon, Cal linebacker and former UCD star stopper Teddye Buchanan was selected by the Baltimore Ravens with the 27th pick in the fourth round, 129th overall. In the fifth round, Sacramento State All-American offensive lineman Jackson Slater was selected by the Tennessee Titans with the 31st pick, 167th overall.
