The end came too soon and swift for the Sacramento area’s top-ranked baseball team and third-ranked softball club on a mixed day from CIF Northern California Regional openers on Tuesday. Seeded second in the Division I baseball bracket, Franklin High School of Elk Grove fell to No. 7 Los Gatos, 9-8, as the Wildcats of Santa Clara County held off a late rally. Franklin came in as winners of the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division I tournament.

It’s the end of an era in El Dorado Hills with the retirement of a teaching and coaching fixture at Oak Ridge High School. But Steve White isn’t going away for good. The winningest basketball coach in the history of the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section in his 30 seasons leading the Trojans girls program, White said this academic year was his final one as an on-campus math teacher and as athletic director.

The final week of the high school sports season for Sacramento-area teams is this week with the CIF Northern California baseball and softball playoffs. All other sports for this academic year are over. Baseball and softball regional openers are Tuesday with the semifinals on Thursday and the championships on Saturday, all at home sites and all with a 4 p.m. first pitch. There is not a CIF state championship in these sports, not with graduations and senior trips consuming so many teenage lives.

The River City High School of West Sacramento senior accomplished her goal in her two events on a blistering hot Saturday evening in Fresno County in the 105th CIF State Track & Field Championships.

Congrats to Baseball on their 4-1 win and sweep of Rocklin. Dylan Wood (5 inn, 1H, 6K) earned the win. Royal McKinney (2 inn, 1ER, 3K) earned the save. Chance Moore drove in 2 on a triple and then scored on a wild pitch. Tyler Cody drove in McKinney, who tripled, for the 4th run.
