JOE DUBINMain Street Media of TN Recently, I had the wonderful opportunity to speak to Habitat for Humanity Nashville and Wilson County at their annual luncheon. It was a packed house, and as I was going over last-minute changes to my speech, I stopped to hear the testimony of someone who had just gotten a house from Habitat. Now, if you don’t know, they don’t just give you a house. It is a process. A long process that requires patience, commitment and dedication. Oh, volunteering as well.

JOE DUBINMain Street Media of TN My son is graduating from high school this month, and for some odd reason, as I have written before, I am having the toughest time with it. Funny, my daughter graduated back in 2017, and I was over the moon excited for her. Why, though, is this one giving me so much trouble? I tried to explain in that story that writing is my therapy, and that did help, but I never found the answer. Maybe I am not meant to.

One summer night back in 1988, I was working as a valet parker at Opryland Hotel. Late that night, a guest arrived in one of the coolest cars I had ever seen. A Sterling. All the bells and whistles and leather and everything you think a fancy British car would have. As I am going to park the car, I wave another valet over and say, “Let’s see how fast this baby can go on Briley Parkway.”We got on Briley and turned around at Two Rivers Parkway.

The last semester of my high school life was something that went by in a flash. June seemed a long way off for graduation when we started school in January. Yes, we were supposed to get out in May, but believe it or not, it used to snow a lot, and so school stretched into June. There were college choices, ACTs, senior doings, prom and then graduation. Not once, not one time, did I think about what all this meant to my mom.

I could not do it. No, thank you. I could not do it. Frankly, I don’t know how anyone does it, but I have utmost respect for those that do. I don’t think they do it for the glory because if this is what glory is, boy I missed this one by a mile. A referee. An umpire. An official. You could not pay me enough money to do these jobs. I recently sat courtside at a college basketball game and some of the things they yelled at the referees would have made Redd Foxx blush.
