When they were cleaning out Frank Tomaino’s apartment, they came across a baseball, unique and surely valuable. The baseball, wrapped in tissue paper, was signed by Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Gil McDougald, Elston Howard and other New York Yankees, winners of the 1958 World Series. Frank was a huge Yankee fan. His love of the Bronx Bombers was mentioned during his funeral Mass at St. Mary of Mount Carmel, in East Utica, this past Saturday. How Frank got that old baseball, I do not know.

This happened in 1978 when I was a “cub reporter,” which means I was new to the job at the Observer-Dispatch and didn’t know what I was doing. The police scanner went off. Fire trucks were being dispatched to Oneida National Bank, 268 Genesee Street, today the site of Nostro’s, a restaurant. Frank Tomaino, the newspaper’s city editor, who always had one ear on the scanner, said to me, “Better get up there,” meaning to the bank. My car was right out front.
