A review by An Coimisiún Toghcháin of the conduct of the Seanad elections last January has made a number of recommendations to improve the electoral process for the upper house. Chief among those is a recommendation to introduce a supplementary register ahead of the next election. Unlike Dáil elections, current law does not allow for a supplementary Seanad register, meaning there is one fixed deadline that people must be registered by or risk missing out on their Seanad vote.

People Before Profit-Solidarity TD Ruth Coppinger has introduced a bill in the Dáil to ban fox hunting in Ireland, aiming to amend the Animal and Health Welfare Act. She said Ireland is an outlier now as fox hunting is banned in England, Scotland and Wales. Ms Coppinger said fox hunting is one of Ireland's most inhumane activities, despite a code of conduct introduced by the minister in 1998.

Fourteen-year-old disability rights campaigner Cara Darmody has been invited to meet Taoiseach Micheál Martin at Leinster House this morning. The meeting was due to take place at 9am. Cara was accompanied by her father into the Department of the Taoiseach at Government Buildings. She spent the night in a tent outside Leinster House as part of a 50-hour protest, calling for urgent action on growing waiting lists for child disability assessments.

The Social Democrats have introduced a bill in the Dáil calling for a referendum to reduce the voting age to 16 years. The bill was proposed by Deputy Aidan Farrelly, who was proposing his first piece of legislation in the Dáil. He told the house that reducing the voting age to 16 is an "issue of fairness not competence, of equality not maturity".
