Montreal Island's 18-riding federal map might remain comfortably dominated by Liberal red-with Bloc Québecois accents and one NDP orange speck-but the Jewish community is paying particular attention to a race that stands a chance of adding a different shade of blue. Mount Royal, a diverse urban riding spanning four west-central municipalities, has been Liberal since 1940.

About a dozen people arrived at the Cavendish Mall around 7 p.m. on April 7, and assumed their positions outside the doorway of the CinéStarz multiplex theatre. It was because the shopping centre, located in the Montreal suburb of Côte Saint-Luc, was playing host to a special Monday night screening of the documentary film about events triggered by what happened in Israel exactly 18 months earlier.

There were 90,250 Jews in Montreal in 2021, according to the 2021 Census: 580 more individuals than were counted a decade earlier. And while 0.6 percent increase might seem like a blip, it represented the first gain in 50 years.

The college student walkout called by a pro-Palestinian group Wednesday in Montreal denounced what they call the "ZIonist agenda" of Quebec's Minister of Higher Education. Organizers urged Dawson and Vanier students to leave classes and denounce Pascale Déry's investigation into the climate at the two English CEGEPs, where she has highlighted a toxic and explosive climate on campus has seen students being bullied, anti-Israel activities with antisemitic elements, and abuse from the podium.
