Seems chronology has run up the score on the head ball coach. Steve Spurrier turns 80 on Sunday, still two shy of the school-record total his Gators offense tacked on against Central Michigan in 1997 (that one was 82-6). Though he'd likely struggle to shoot his age on a golf course these days, the Heisman Trophy winner and two-time College Football Hall of Famer (as a player and coach) remains pretty fit for a guy embarking on his ninth decade.

TAMPA — Only two years after possessing less depth than a dime-store novel, USF’s offensive line stands arguably as the Bulls’ figurative backbone. These days, the unit teems with girth, experience, chemistry, intuition and even irony. Credit Jesuit High alumnus Connor McLaughlin for lugging that last trait into the room. A Stanford transfer, the dude returned to his back yard, his family’s regular Sunday dinner gatherings, and his beloved bay area fishing spots to get out of his comfort zone.

GAINESVILLE — The eye test and raw numbers from Saturday’s Orange and Blue Game conspired to convey the impression that Florida’s just fine at quarterback. In time, that notion might be validated. But fans have seen enough of these scrimmages to know that what glistens in April could be deemed pyrite by September. After all, the squad was split and the QBs shielded from contact (a slap on the shoulder pads constituted a sack).
