A former player, team captain, and assistant coach at Butler, Thad Matta certainly means a lot to the Bulldogs. He began his head coaching career with Butler back in 2000, spending a single season before experiencing more success at Xavier and Ohio State in later years. Matta led Ohio State to a pair of Final Fours before retiring in 2017 and surprised many when he took the Butler job for a second time five years later.

Significant basketball progress came at Florida State under Leonard Hamilton’s long tenure with the school, including three Sweet Sixteen’s and an Elite Eight run in the last eight seasons. After some flat results in recent years, Hamilton announced his retirement and thrust the Seminoles into their first coaching search in nearly a quarter century. Fittingly enough, Florida State landed on a former player for their next leader, naming Luke Loucks to that position three months ago.

Things haven’t been quite so brilliant at Syracuse in recent years. Adrian Autry inherited quite the position when he succeeded Jim Boeheim back in 2023 but his first two seasons running the show haven’t gone according to plan. Quite honestly, this has been a rough stretch for the Orange since their surprise run to the Final Four in 2016 but perhaps better days are ahead?

When the 2022 NCAA Tournament rolled around, Lamont Paris certainly asserted himself as a rising name in the coaching world, helming Chattanooga to the Big Dance with a SoCon championship. Just a few weeks later, Paris was off to South Carolina, taking over for Frank Martin. He certainly had hopes of turning the Gamecocks into a more regular contender in the SEC after just one Tourney appearance in the last decade.
