If you’re like me, when you see David Dastmalchian on your screen, you can’t help but grin. Whatever he’s in, you know it’s going to be interesting. Not only does the man have a distinctive look about him, he has a distinctive taste in his projects that lends to any film or television lover being in for a treat. Currently, he can be seen on the big screen in The Life of Chuck, as well as on the small screen in Murderbot.

Rachel Bloom is about as talented an actress and comedian as it gets. Watch just a few minutes of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and you’ll see that. However, when you watch her musical comedy special, with the ingenious title of Rachel Bloom: Death, Let Me Do My Special, you’ll see that she has so much more on her mind. It’s a deceptively ambitious work, which made a chat with her something I was very keen to do. Recently, we hopped on Zoom for upwards of a half hour, getting into all manner of things.

Without a doubt, Pixar is a name that means something in the world of animated cinema. It’s a stamp of quality unlike anything else the medium has seen. Throughout its history, there have been multiple runs where Pixar was clearly on a level far different than any other animation house. So, when you look at the films they’ve put out into the world, it’s classic after classic. Even beyond those movies, there’s a wonderful mix of some of the best animated works of all time.

Making any animated film is a real intense experience. Making one at Pixar seems like it’s just as hard, though somehow more pleasurable. For Elio directors Domee Shi and Madeline Sharafian, as well as producer Mary Alice Drumm, it felt that way in spades. I spoke to Brad Garrett yesterday (here) about the movie (and previously spoke to Shi here about Turning Red). Today, it’s Shi, Sharafian, and Drumm up to bat.

For most of the running time of Relay, we’re watching a real throwback sort of film. The paranoid thriller of the 1970s was of a specific time period, one that fit it perfectly, but it also just makes for an incredibly engaging experience when done well. This movie is very much indebted to that, albeit with modern technology. Then, the third act takes things one twist too far. However, that’s just what makes the flick good instead of great.
