When Prey came out a few years ago (reviewed here), filmmaker Dan Trachtenberg found a really exciting way to tackle the Predator IP. By going back to basics, as well as suggesting how different time periods easily lend themselves to stories of this hunter, it really did seem like something was unlocked. The sequel to Prey, Predator: Badlands, is coming soon, but first, we have the animated anthology Predator: Killer of Killers.

With any dark comedy, you want the film to have bite, for sure, but you also don’t want it to ever get too mean. When a movie is mean-spirited, it stops being fun. I bring this up because I Don’t Understand You is an example of a flick that very nearly commits this sin. It walks perilously close to the line, but never quite trips over it. So, you wind up with a pitch black comedy, one with genre elements, that doesn’t lose its audience, even if it comes close a time or two.

It’s no secret, so I’m just going to get straight to it…Kevin Smith is one of my favorite filmmakers. As far back as when I was first getting into film, Smith was someone I gravitated towards immediately. Sure, occasionally it leads to some smirking at an Oscar prognosticator loving a storyteller far from the awards race, but we love who we love. It’s no secret my affection for the man, but not everyone knows how I feel about all of his flicks.

It’s Tribeca Festival time! Yes, the 2025 incarnation of Tribeca is getting underway this week for press like yours truly, with both in person and virtual screenings (plus, as always, perhaps some things I may have links for). The festival always has interesting movies contained within, taking advantage of playing at a unique point in the cinematic calendar. Pre-COVID, the fest was slightly earlier in the year, but the principle still remains.
