There have been five comprehensive surveys of public opinion in the last two weeks that attempt to assess President Donald Trump’s standing with the public at the end of his first hundred days. The polls are by The New York Times/Siena, The Washington Post/Ipsos, CBS News/YouGov, NPR/Marist, and The Economist/YouGov. Some of the results are unsurprising: Trump is in trouble with the public, but so are the Democrats.

Was the 2024 election a political freak of nature—the result of an aging president unwilling to acknowledge his disability until it was too late? Was it merely an instance of the anti-incumbency trend seen in many countries in the wake of post-pandemic inflation? What, for instance, do we learn from the fact that Rep. Jamie Raskin, who was part of the congressional committee investigation into January 6, and Donald Trump are both Baby Boomers? Or that Taylor Swift and Enrique Tarrio, the leader of the Proud Boys, are both Millennials? Nothing really.

Since the 2008 election, Democrats have been counting on young voters as an essential part of what they called a "new American majority." But the 2024 election may have spelled the end of the youth vote as a dependable part of the Democrats' coalition. Parts of it should endure—in particular, young college-educated women—but other parts may fall by the wayside unless Democrats find a way to win them back. The Democrats' large-scale support among young voters goes back to the early 2000s.
